All library staff should have readers' advisory tips and tricks at the ready. Build (or refresh) your toolkit for providing RA service to patrons. Attendees will evaluate which reliable RA resources work best for them, explore "appeal factors" that influence reader opinions and professional reviews, examine popular reading genres/microgenres/tropes, and review the essentials of good RA discussion. This presentation has an adult services focus, however many of the fundamentals are also applicable to youth services.

Library staff have the potential to hand patrons books that better make them understand themselves, their fellow community members, and the world. Knowing what books exist is the first step to getting them in patrons’ hands. Come to learn from six youth services professionals about diverse nonfiction books and books featuring transgender characters, characters with mental and physical disabilities, gender non-conforming kids, and U.S. American Indians and Alaskan Natives characters.

Creating an environment of belonging and inclusion starts with individual action, yet often it can be difficult to get started. Join in this interactive session that will help in building skills to foster inclusion. Attendees will learn the meaning of allyship and engage in activities designed to support DEIB that you can bring back to your home libraries.
