High School to College Transition: Are They Research Ready?

In this collaborative project, academic librarians across six colleges in New Jersey surveyed first-year students regarding their research preparation and their experiences in high school and in their first year of college. Data from this study was used in a subsequent article that looked at first-years' confidence in specific information literacy skills, the strategies learners brought with them from high school, and how research projects, expectations, and finding and using information were different from high school to college.

Which World: Using Far Fetched Scenarios to Map the Future of NJ Libraries

What if libraries across the country planned for a 2020 global pandemic – back in 1996? What if NASA had alien contact? What if a search engine for the physical world was created? What if libraries and books were deemed illegal and banished from society? If you are saying to yourself, “this is crazy” this session is for you. Come find out why crazy may be actual probable, possible, or preferred futures based on current trend patterns.

The Library as a Unicorn Space

"Unicorn Space", coined by Eve Rodsky, is the active pursuit of something you love and brings joy and value to your life. This session will help library staff create a work environment that fosters their own Unicorn Space, and how to share that with the public. Side effects may include: reduced staff burnout, a joyful work environment, and new ideas, services, and programs that connect with the community we serve.

Breaking Down the Digital Divide: Device Lending Programs for Libraries

The creation of a device lending program at your library helps break down access barriers for your patrons by providing the tools and devices needed to access your online library and digital collections. This session will show how libraries throughout the state have approached breaking down the digital divide by circulating hotspots, Chromebooks, iPads, and tablets to their patrons.

Creating ComicCon Style Events That Harness the Power of ALL of the Infinity Stones

Have you ever wanted your library to leap tall buildings? Possess a green ring with cosmic powers? Or be located in a galaxy far, far away?? Well, those things aren’t possible. But you CAN host an awesome Comic Convention at your library! Join three NJ librarians with many years of experience creating “ComicCon” style events and learn of their wisdom (and their failures) in hosting these events at libraries just like yours.

Let’s Talk Zines: Break the Barrier of Having Zines in Your Library

Zines are the easiest way towards inclusive collaboration between your library and your patrons. Join our discussion about breaking barriers that might stop you from including zines and zine making in your library programming. We’ll talk about what zines are, why they help with mental health, how easy they are to create and share, and ways to offer them alongside other forms of standard library publications. Bring your curiosity and questions for this discussion.

All In This Together: Reciprocity in New Jersey Public Libraries

Libraries accomplish great things when they work together. New Jersey’s public libraries operate under dozens of reciprocal agreements and arrangements, all geared towards expanding services to our patrons. How can we keep track of all of them? In this program, attendees will learn about these reciprocal agreements, how they operate, who they serve, tools for collecting and presenting this data, implications for digital content, and how we can leverage this information to further improve services.
