With limited annual funds and shrinking capital budgets for library renovations, this presentation will offer a path forward to complete a larger(er) renovation project over multiple budget years without sacrificing the benefit of the whole design. The key to this success is simple: complete the whole design first, including all furniture, finishes,tr and architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and information technology impact. As libraries transform into community learning and education centers, the consolidation or bifurcation of spaces to accommodate the new and upcoming library functions of the future may include the relocation, redesign, or removal of walls, lighting, HVAC, power and information technology coupled with complimentary and coordinating furniture and finishes. With today’s constant access to changing technology, new furniture includes both power and data ports for patrons, multiple lighting zones for intimate reading or group activities, and both transparent and solid folding partitions for the ultimate ability to transform the library learning areas every day. Let’s design for the future together, in budget manageable phases, and anticipate all the design impacts in order to execute the most efficient and effective whole project.
