The idea of developing special collections at small academic libraries may seem outdated in our data-driven world. Small institutions often lack the means to obtain rare books. But auction sites like eBay can be used to build low-cost paperback collections that provide plenty of research opportunities. This presentation illustrates how Monmouth University Library spent just $400 on multiple inexpensive copies of Jane Eyre and Animal Farm, and used those materials to inspire successful, librarian-led student research projects.
